Seriously. I won’t stop talking about this.

Taylor Swift and Adam Young at least need to give me a CD full of duets. I was driving home, and I was all like, OWL CITY has been a part of my life for the last 16 or so months, and I haven’t gotten tired of his music. Every now and again I’m in the mood for something else, but before long I’ll find that I’m listening to his tracks over and over and over and over again. Seriously, if you added up every other play of every other artist that I’ve listened to in that time period, OWL CITY would be winning by like a 10-1 ratio. I love Taylor Swift too, though her songs are harder to sing to, and a bit less intimate with my soul-stuffs.

But I love her as a person! (in a totally ok way).

If they ended up dating for a while that’d be great.

At least one duet.

I just want him to release a few more songs. I’ve got literally every track he’s ever released. Karaoke versions and instrumental covers from other bands.

I think it’s time I UP the ante and start getting the merch.

I have started to make a name for myself as a Sony fanboy. When did this happen? Eight years ago my brother and best friend made a pact with me saying we’d never own anything not made by Nintendo. (We were thirteen).

This generation has been both kind and unkind to Nintendo. Whilst the Wii plays great on an older standard definition television, it looks atrocious (even with component cables) on the TV that I own. So I’ve bought a PS3. I really wanted to play Call of Duty. That’s the honest answer there.

Now that I’m done with that, I’ve begun a foray into the gaming the PS3 really has to offer. One of Sony’s exclusives is Little Big Planet. It’s weak. That’s all there is to it. Here’s WHY.

Gameplay: Weak. It’s a current gen first party platformer with platforming 101 issues. It can’t conquer depth issues that Paper Mario never had a decade ago. The characters, while CUTE, can’t jump. At all. So the imprecise-unpowerful jumps are your main methods of defeating enemies, and getting through the level. (BTW platforming is MARIO for those of you who made it this far and are puzzled, you have my blessing to stop reading now).

Lag: Two players on one screen? No problem, except for that mili-second of lag everytime you interact with the level. Four players online? No problem, except there’s too much going on, and somehow the lag is just getting worse and worse. Couple this with those depth issues, and you’ve got a tortuous online experience. (I’ve tried it again and again without successful results.)

Story: There is none.

DLC: This is varied, and can be fun, my Sackboy is currently running around all Captain America styled. The problem is if I play a level with a friend who has a DLC I don’t have, I can gain items, and every time I scroll over that item, they try to make me buy the DLC. I don’t want anything beyond my Marvel Costumes (though there are some TRON ones I think).

Achievements. In order to perfect the game, you’ve got to do some pretty insane things, and most of those things require other people. That’s stupid. It’s not an online required game, so don’t force me to play with people when I’d rather play alone. In fact, I get ONE silver trophy for beating all the levels. Silly. (even though it’s not a long game, really).

Now the game does get some things RIGHT!

Creativity: You can do and make just about anything in this game. Within the cutesy parameters that is. The second game (which I have yet to pick up, and won’t do so until I can get a copy for around twenty bucks (unless one of you can persuade me otherwise)) is supposed to EXPONENTIALIZE on the create a level part of the game. Which is good, take what you do best and make it better. This is not a review of the second game though. (and I’ve heard the depth issues don’t disappear). The create a levels are usually more fun than the story levels, and there’s a lot to look at, over a million levels. Which is great.

Appeal: Now I think the game relies TOO much on appeal (see above pics), but that isn’t necessarily a bad thing. There’s always something cutesy and fun to look at. It’s like Juno (from Juno) and Pixar got together and made a universe. It’s fun. It really is.

Now a lot of you are saying! This review is three years late. Of course it is. I picked this game up for $18 and feel a little… slighted. I’m going to explore the created levels some more, but outside of that this game isn’t holding my interest. It’s not better than Mario.

It’s like Minecraft for nerdier nerds. Who didn’t have the misfortune to pick up an xBox. (Gameplay is weak, but you can make stuff, with stuff). Not really like minecraft at all, but I’d still like to make a giant gold cock’n’ball level in LBP.

Anyway. That’s what I think. I know you think I’m wrong (Stefan), but there it is.

Later Edit: I do want to say I gave this game a fair chance. I bought it for a friend and myself. I even made Haley sit and play with me. I’ve put several hours into it. I’m not judging this without working through it. This isn’t a Halo rant, this is a legitimate hands-on critique.

I used to talk a lot in High School about those people who hadn’t had their hearts and souls broken by some event or another (usually brought on by the rejection of shared connection). Some of you know who I’m talking about, those people whose lives aren’t burdened by the weight of tragedy in one of its guises.

I see them now. Quite a few of them are pursuing their unhindered dreams. I feel like I’m starting to really grasp what “rude awakening” might mean.

I’ve seen one kid deny it. Constantly. I admire him, yet feel guilty for not pissing all over him.

I’m not talking about those kids who are going out to become doctors or something like that; I’m talking about… that kid who wanted to go to Harvard. That girl who wrote a book. That chick who posts her art up every day for six friends to like. That girl who “models” for her best friend who happens to be a “photographer”.

You can’t write. You can’t act. You can’t sing. You can’t play. You can’t draw.

These are the things I think, I see, I burn to tell them. Who am I though? I’m not any better, and I can’t do any of those things. I am doubt, fear and narcissism.

I know the world’s going to crush them, and they’ll find vindication teaching the next generation how to be third-rate, but that doesn’t make me better. I’m envious, if anything, of that will-power.

Or something.

I’ve decided to embrace my role as “one who enjoys things”.

I have a goal for the number of books/movies/games I want to read/view/beat this year. Here’s what we have so far.

Games!

Uncharted: Drake’s Fortune

I beat black ops two days before the new year… I’m halfway through the second Uncharted and Mass Effect… I think I’ll beat around 3 games this next month… which will easily put me up to my quota of “25” games for the year. Ish. We shall see.

Books!

Water For Elephants
Mass Effect 1 & 2

This puts me right ABOVE my goal of fifty books for the year 2011.

Easy A (Twice)

and I’m halfway through Buried and Ocean’s 12, but stuff came up during both movies. This puts me at ten. Which is well below my goal. Worry not! I will easily make it up… The summer blockbusters, plus Haley and I’s moving in will probably significantly boost the number of movies I see in the months to come, and we can’t forgot about the TRONS on blu-ray which will probably merit several viewings each.

The one thing I did want to say I accomplished media-wise this month is the complete viewing of the Cartoon Network series “The Justice League”. At 91 episodes thats not small feat, that’s the equivalent of watching… around 18 movies. Whilst Television shows aren’t on my list, I will mention them monthly.

Why should you care? You shouldn’t, I just like to keep track of things. Is all. LISTS.
